Summer of 2011 will have many changes for our small family. Adam pursued a new job that is moving our family to McKinney, Texas. Starting June 1, he is working for Traxxas. And if a move isn't a big enough change already, we are expecting a baby girl due July 19. Alexa already loves "baby sister"! We feel strongly that God has been clear on His plans for us and that makes us so excited for what is in our near future. As we are (sadly) leaving many amazing, amazing friends and family in Kansas, we felt it was important to start the blog back up so we can keep everyone in the loop. Thank you all for your never ending support on this adventure for our growing family!

On the Road to Recovery

Another day of improvement. Alexa went to bed at 6:30 last night and I had to wake her up at 11:00 today. I couldn't believe she slept that long and I only woke her up to get her to eat and drink something. She's enjoying some playtime and I'm sure she'll go back to bed shortly. I wanted to get some pictures though because I know there's plenty of people who visited us and saw how sick Alexa was. I got some smiles out of her and she just looks so much better.

Not quite ready to smile, but enjoying the toys.

Playing hard, it's been too long.

Finally looked at the camera...

And there's a smile!!

Still smiling but just won't look at the camera...

Home

We are home! We left the hospital around noon today and we're very very happy to be home. Of course, Alexa still isn't quite herself but we know that will take some days. She is eating and drinking and smiling! It is for short periods because she is very tired, but we will take anything we can get!! She went to bed at 6:30 tonight and it would be awesome if she sleeps through the night, but we'll see. :) Thanks everyone for the prayers; thank you to all our visitors; and thank to all our kind and helpful friends and family. (This is short... I'm exhausted... might go to bed by 8:00...) Thank you God for making Alexa better and letting us go home!

Update

Things are looking better for little miss Alexa! Grandma Munsch came to help out this afternoon. So when Adam got off work, he came by to pick me up and we went home for dinner while Grandma watched Alexa. And Grandma's touch, she got Alexa to drink some grape juice! We had been trying all day to get her to drink or eat and she'd get so mad. Adam and I get back to the hospital and try giving her some milk. She was resistant at first but then drank a couple ounces. She was sitting on my lap and was actually looking at me a lot. She had been refusing to look at anyone since we're at the hospital. So I smiled at her and I finally got a good smile back! I smiled again and she did again. I took her pacifier out and just started making faces at her and she was just smiling and smiling. It was awesome! She hasn't smiled but one time since we've been in the hospital. I even got her to giggle just a little bit. It didn't last too long but it was so worth it! Alexa was getting cranky and Adam took her to help calm her down. We decided to try milk one more time and she actually reached for her cup immediately and started drinking. AWESOME! Oh and her fever did break this morning and she has been fine since. They took her temp just an hour ago and it was 98.9 (or close too... my memory is shot...) Hopefully Alexa will get a real good night's sleep and be even better tomorrow. We'll try solid food for breakfast and if she can do that and still drink some fluids, I'm sure we'll go home tomorrow!! Thank you God!

News

Hi everyone. Well this isn't the same cheerful posts that we normally have. I usually only post the exciting news with Alexa, but we wanted to inform everyone about something that's been going on. We apologize for not emailing or calling everyone individually. It's been a crazy few days and that's just impossible to tell everyone, so please don't be offended if this is the first you're hearing of the news.
We are currently at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Saturday night Alexa had a seizure. Mother's instinct with God's help, I found Alexa as soon as she started having the seizure. I had just turned off the light to go to sleep and I heard 3 weird noises from her so I decided to go check on her before I went to sleep. She was in her bed basically having convulsions. (Is that the right word?) I take her out and put on the floor, on her side, because I had no idea what was going on and I just knew to put her on the side so she wouldn't choke. I yell for Adam and he calls 911 right away. We're estimating that Alexa was seizing for about 2 minutes. It was the scariest thing ever. Then her lips start turning blue and her eyes roll to the back of her head. Scary. Scary. Scary. Right before EMS showed up, Alexa did stop and vomited a little. She was breathing but irregular.
We got to the hospital about 11:45 Saturday night. We were moved to PICU around 3:00 am. Once they were done poking her and poking her, she did sleep through the night. When she woke up, she was acting real funny. She ends up having another seizure but not a full blown one. She was in and out for about 45 minutes. During that time, the nurses and doctors were trying to get her IV. They finally gave her valium to stop the seizure because they were having such a hard time with the IV and then gave her 2 anti-seizure medicines. Alexa was obviously really out of it the rest of the day. They did a spinal tap, brain MRI, and blood work on Sunday. All those results came back normal. Alexa has ran a fever since we've been here. They did an EEG yesterday and those results were normal.
So after all the tests and everything, they think that her seizure was caused by a spike in her temperature with the fever. This is not uncommon in kids. They have a name for this type of seizure, but I don't know how to spell it. They couldn't find a cause for her fever, so they believe that it is from something viral. Alexa will not be put on any anti-seizure medicine, but we will get a prescription for something to have with us at all times that we would give her if she did have another seizure. If she ever does, we'll go see the neurologist and they will probably put her on meds then.
We were moved last night from the PICU to a regular room. We will be here until Alexa starts to eat/drink "normal". She has been refusing her milk. So we just pray she'll feel better soon so that we can get her home. She seems to be a little more comfortable today. Her temp has gone down to 99 so she hasn't had any ibuprofen since midnight. We will update the blog with any new information or when we get to go home. Thanks for the prayers!

Alexa Still Crawling!!

Alexa is still crawling!! Just a few times each day but we're not complaining! =) Here she is going for her shoes again. Alexa likes her shoes. This video has her crawling a little further but it's a back view. If Alexa knows we're watching her, she'll just put her hands up in the sign for "up" so that we would move her instead. She tries to take the easy way out. Wow, can you believe she's really crawling?? Thank you God! We are so happy!

Alexa Crawling!!

This was quick!! Alexa just woke up from her nap and she crawled for me right away! Now I know she doesn't go very far, but you all have to understand still how big of a deal this is! She has gone a little further just a couple times, but this was pretty good, especially for trying to catch her on video. I did keep recording because she was trying to put the circle puzzle piece in the puzzle. Unfortunately, the camera stopped recording right before she got it in. (Puzzles are another thing we've been working on with her lately!)
-
Stay tuned... I'll try to get another video and will post again... Enjoy!

Simply Amazing

We can really say it's official. Alexa "crawled" small amounts about 10 times yesterday. She knows how to do it and she knows what it does for her. So very exciting!! She'll still need a lot of practice to be good at it and go everywhere, but we know she'll do it! It takes Alexa a while to figure things out, but once she does, she does it all the time!! We have waited for this moment for a long time and many times, wondered if she would just skip the crawling stage. But now, wow, I'm still so excited. Alexa even crawled for daddy last night and went pretty far (at least 2 feet). Amazing! God is great!
-
I will try very hard to get this milestone on video very soon. As soon as I do, I will upload the video right away.
-
Thank you God!! And thank you to all our family and friends for all the prayers and constant encouragement!!

Time to Baby Proof?

-

Alexa officially crawled!! On her hands and knees - crawled!! It might have only been only 7 or 8 inches, but she really crawled! Hands and knees... moved right knee forward... moved left knee forward!! Motivation? Her cute gladiator sandals!!

It may not be another week until she does it again, but from experience, we know this is the start!!!

More Videos

Here are a few short videos that Grandpa Munsch took when they were visiting. This first one is Alexa on her new toy. She figured it out so quick. She always loves rocking on toys so we found one that she could have at home. She has some goofy grins in this video.

Alexa has always thought dogs are so funny. She laughs at Matty all the time and it's just pretty cute.

Save the best (or so I think) for last. This video is just AWESOME! I think everyone knows that recently, Alexa just starting getting into sitting from laying. That is huge because transitions are her most difficult thing to learn. Well, before this video (which was about a week and half ago) she had only got herself into sitting less than 10 times; she wouldn't do it every day; and if she did do it twice in one day, it was never back to back. On this particular day, right after Grandma and Grandpa Munsch showed up, she just started showing off. She kept going back and forth between sitting and laying. She did it at least 10 times in a row. We were lucky to get a video of a couple times at the end. It was so awesome. And if you have the volume up, you can hear how excited and surprised I am. She was acting shy and would go into laying but then sit herself back up... back and forth, back and forth. This was one of my proudest moments and I still get so excited to watch the video. For the next couple days, she didn't do it as frequent, but lately she is on a roll. She has it figured out and does it all the time now. She gets into hands and knees to get a toy and then sits herself back up. She has even moved her knee forward just slightly before she either goes all the way down or sits back up. Little Alexa is getting so much stronger and just progressing so much. It's been pretty awesome the last couple months!!!

Alexa Walking with Push Toy

This is awesome! Before when I used to try having Alexa push a toy and walk, she would keep her knees locked and just fall forward when the toy moved. WELL, at church on Wednesday, I decided to try again and she just started walking with it immediately. Jan let us borrow one to practice at home. Here she is!!!

July 4th Weekend

Grandma and Grandpa Munsch came to visit over the 4th of July weekend. Alexa had a great weekend.
